Thirteen innovative environmental initiatives were on 19th May, 2016 awarded cash prizes at the third edition of the NETFUND Green Innovations Award (GIA). ICOSEED from Kirinyaga County, who also won the Civil Society Organisation category, emerged overall winner of this third phase. ICOSEED empowers women and youth through using banana fiber pseudo stem to make valuable products like kiondos, mats and wall hangings that are sold in the local and tourism market.

The NETFUND gala event to award the 13 nominees and the GIA Investors’ Forum, and Expo/Exhibition that took place at the KICC cumulatively attracted over 2,000 diverse stakeholders from government, private sector, development partners and incubation centers. The three events aimed to showcase, celebrate and link to investors green innovations in Kenya. The investor conference and Expo were the first of their kind at NETFUND sought to facilitate investor linkages and fill the gap of little known green innovations sector in Kenya through knowledge sharing sessions at the expo.
The Principal Secretary, State Department of Environment and Regional Development Authorities, Charles Sunkuli; P.S Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Nancy Karigithu, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Regional Representative, Michel Balima, were among the guests.
