NEED: The Naitushurr Enkolia CBO was formed when a group of widows came together to deal with socio economic problems afflicting them. The group initially started out as a merry go round and burnt and sold charcoal to improve their livelihoods.
AVENUE TO MEET NEED: Later on the group women started bee keeping and water harvesting initiatives. The project, considerably strengthened the women’s livelihoods by reducing poverty levels while at the same time promoting environmental conservation through the planting of indigenous trees. There was also an improved value chain of honey and honey products.
IMPACT: The group increased its beneficiaries from 30 to 40; 25 were employed directly while 15 were employed indirectly.
INNOVATION: Bee keeping and water harvesting initiatives
NETFUND EFFECT: NETFUND partnered with the group in an up scaling program where it received training for capacity building. As a result, the group increased its beneficiaries from 30 to 40; 25 were employed directly while 15 were employed indirectly.
The group is able to produce 70 kilograms of honey per year which puts their income at KES 180,000 per year. Through the water harvesting program, the group is now able to store 2,000 litres of water which has increased their water accessibility.
