The National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) on November 24, 2015 launched the NETFUND Green Innovations Award (NETFUND GIA). The award, now in its third phase, is supported by the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. The award is a unique scheme that identifies, rewards and nurtures innovative ideas and projects into income generating green enterprises that contribute to poverty alleviation.
NETFUND GIA winners will receive grants of up to KES 2,000,000 to upscale their projects. Innovations selected for business incubation will win support of up to KES. 5,000,000 as technical and business support. Successful graduates of the NETFUND incubation program may also receive Seed funding of up-to KES 2,000,000.

The key target groups for phase III of the award are Women Groups, Schools, Individuals, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) while the thematic focus areas are Waste management, Agribusiness, Energy and Water.
Speaking at today’s launch, Prof. Judi Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Regional Development Authorities said, “From humble beginnings where the Award only sought to recognize environmental heroes, the Award has now been transformed into an avenue where viable entrepreneurial innovations are accelerated through the NETFUND Incubation Program. The incubation program provides technical and business support to the competitively selected applicants. NETFUND also provides seed funding and investment platforms in order to link these businesses to potential investors”.

Prof. Wakhungu also commended the inclusion of the Women’s category in the third phase of the NETFUND GIA awards, terming the move as the right step towards empowering women in Kenya, especially at grassroots level”.
The deadline for submission of entry forms will be on January 30, 2015 while awarding Gala will be  held mid next year. All green innovators are encouraged to apply.
