National Environment Trust Fund partnered with Green Spaces to establish and support the raising of tree nurseries in
an effort to promote afforestation and reforestation in Kirinyaga County. Speaking
at a tree planting event hosted by NETFUND, Mr. Wachira Kibanya who is a patron
at Greenspaces, emphasized on the objective of the event which was to conserve
the environment and create public awareness on the importance of forest
conservation.
“The project’s main
objective is to rehabilitate Mt. Kenya Forest and thereby help mitigate against
effects of climate change”, he added.
A total of 6,000 indigenous trees were planted
during the Tree planting event at Rukenya Dam, Kirinyaga County on 21st
November, 2020. The project seeks to establish a mega seedlings nursery to
raise 20,000 indigenous and exotic trees.
This event was in support of the Ministry
of Environment and Forestry’s efforts to increase Kenya’s tree cover by the
year 2022. In line with its vision of sustainable financing for environmental
management in Kenya, NETFUND has partnered with numerous organizations,
individuals and community groups to raise tree seedlings for tree planting
across the country.
The National Tree planting initiative was
launched by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 12,2018. There has been a concerted
institutional and multi-stakeholder support in attaining the target of 10% tree
cover of the national land area, as provided under Article 69(1)(b) of the
constitution of Kenya.
